The University of Maryland Medical Center is currently seeking a Lead Nursing Coordinator with a desire to join our team. Under limited supervision, plans, coordinates and assists the Director of Clinical Operations in the supervision of Case Management, Nurse Coordinator, and Utilization Review staff of the Shock Trauma Center. This includes providing guidance in regards to policies and procedures related to patient throughput, discharge process, utilization management, and regulatory standards.


Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.


1. Provides guidance and general direction for department operations, working through staff to ensure accurate and timely production.


a. Interprets hospital and department policies and procedures, standards, requirements and regulations of accrediting and regulatory agencies. Assists in the update of quality management practices, policies and procedures as needed to remain compliant.

b. Works with Director to ensure timely discharge planning process is achieved through appropriate assignment of case managers.

c. Manages staffing for case management, nurse coordinators, and utilization review. This includes planned and unplanned time off.

d. Oversight of performance review process, peer review process, and corrective action.

e. Leads the interview process for new staff and provides recommendations for hire to Director.

f. Oversight of the Administrative Coordinator for the department.

g. Collaborates with Director to identify and coordinate in-service and continuing education for all supervised staff.

h. Assists staff to problem solve complex patient scenarios and elevates to the Director as needed.

i. Keeps Director apprised of team needs, barriers, and success in patient throughput.


2. Collaborates with Director and STC leadership to establish departmental goals that support the UMMC strategic plan with focus on patient throughput, utilization management, STC denial, and readmission initiatives.


a. Assists Director in collection of data on denials and readmissions including interpreting reports, identifying trends, and providing insight to process improvement to reduce overall totals.

b. Acts as a resource to admitting specialists regarding authorization policies and procedures of third party payers, acquiring additional clinical information when requested.

c. Remains current on clinical practice and protocols impacting clinical reimbursement including: regulations and changes, medical system charging practices and clinical therapy updates.


3. Communicates regularly with hospital personnel, relevant external agencies and patients/families as needed.

a. Facilitates investigation of patient care issues/complaints.

b. Provides information/education to hospital personnel and outside agencies as necessary relevant to the role of case management, nurse coordinator, and/or utilization management.

c. Attends STC and UMMC quality meetings related to patient throughput and utilization management.

d. Facilitates multi-disciplinary collaboration for identified initiatives.


4. Fosters strong collaborative relationship with UMMC post-acute service, Maryland ExpressCare, Patient Financial Services and onsite Genesis liaisons to improve daily patient throughput.


5. Foster strong collaborative relationship with system hospitals including UMROI and Midtown to address timely and safe transfers.


6. Develops implements and monitors trends in patient placement (census, ExpressCare delays, and Capacity status) to continually improve the patient placement process.


7. Maintains continuous knowledge of patient census, OR & PACU status, Capacity/Bypass, or ExpressCare demands.

a. Ensures continuous analysis of patient throughput. Identifies barriers and/or process issues.

b. Tracks bed turnaround time and analyze variances.

c. Prepares and communicates data on program outcomes to key stakeholders
d. Leads performance improvement for patient placement

8. Collaborates with Social Work and Patient Advocate for complex discharge planning.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse or Allied Health Sciences in the State of Maryland.

Bachelor’s Degree required or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge and ability to understand procedures, practices and policies in the assigned department and for the medical center.


2. Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with hospital staff, patients, visitors, management and all levels of internal and external staff.


3. Ability to respond, investigate, identify and problem-solve regarding issues related to administrative and clinical matters that require immediate and decisive action.


4. Ability to manage staff related to personnel issues such as absenteeism, tardiness, and performance standards and to take the appropriate action.


5. Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively.
