What You Will Do:

The Shock Trauma Operating Rooms are a full service suite of nine operating rooms providing surgical services to patients, twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week. Averages of 17 surgical cases a day are performed in the surgical suites including all “off floor procedures” performed in the Trauma Resuscitation and Intensive Care Units, annualized at 6,300 cases per year.

Types and Ages of Patients Served

Patients served range from the critically ill or traumatically injured through patients undergoing ambulatory procedures (i.e. staged out reconstructive procedures). Patients of all ages are cared for in this OR, ranging from pediatric trauma emergencies; adolescent through geriatric patients. Care for each patient is individualized, based upon his or her unique status and needs following a standard assessment guideline.

Scope and Complexity of Patient Care Needs
Patients with complex medical and physical problems to patients with no limitations are cared for by the Operating Room staff utilizing the same standards guiding the provision of care. Specialty services provided in the Shock Trauma Operating Rooms include (but not limited to) Dental, General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Obstetric/Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Oral-Maxillofacial, Orthopaedic, Otolaryngology, Pediatric, Plastic, Thoracic, Trauma and Vascular procedures.

Strategies to Assess and Meet Patient Care Needs

Each operating room is staffed with a minimum of two nursing staff members, two registered nurses or one registered nurse and a surgical technologist. An anesthesiologist directs the care in conjunction with anesthesia residents or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. General, regional, or monitored anesthesia care is provided for all patients and the anesthesia plan is discussed (as reasonable) with every patient prior to the surgical procedure. Surgical residents are supervised by Surgical Fellows and Attending Surgeons during all procedures. Surgical Residents are actively involved in preparing patients for their surgical procedure by completing a history and physical assessment, and, obtaining the necessary surgical, anesthesia and blood consents in advance of the procedure. Care is provided to all patients in a collaborative, multidisciplinary model.

Patient Care Providers

The Operating Rooms are staffed by in-house registered nurses and surgical technologists twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The medical staff consists of in-house trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, fellows, surgical, anesthesia and emergency medicine residents. Ancillary personnel, who support patient care delivery in the operating rooms, include anesthesia technicians, surgical support technicians, perfusion services, equipment technicians, neuromonitoring technicians and housekeepers. In addition to these staff, other technically trained staff is available during normally scheduled hours of operation and on-call to support specific patient care needs. A staffing model is prepared annually to outline workload data, staffing patterns, and fiscal year budget information. Performance is tracked and discussed monthly in combination with quality, human resource, and financial data. Nursing and support staff attend new employee orientation, annual training, weekly in-service’s and receive additional professional development as needed to assure competency to achieve and maintain PARC requirements.

What You Need to Be Successful:

2 years of O.R. Experience. BSN strongly preferred, will consider ADN with O.R. experience.
